아저씨 안녕하세요? 저는 초등학교에 다니고 있는 학생입니다. 아저씨는 저를 모르지만 저는 아저씨를 작년에 처음 알게 됐는데 혹시 저를 기억하실는지요? 저는 작년에 우연히 초록우산에서 주최하는 ‘감사편지 쓰기’ 대회에서 아저씨를 알게 됐습니다. 저는 글 읽는 것을 좋아합니다. 저희 엄마는 아저씨의 ‘아침편지’를 보고 저에게 좋은 글들을 읽어 주시곤 합니다. 초등학생인 저에게도 따뜻하고 마음이 좋아지는 글들을 읽게 해주셔서 다시 한 번 아저씨께 감사드려요.

작년 이맘때쯤이었지요! 제게 너무나 소중하신 할머니를 다시 보게 해주신 고마운 분께 ‘이 편지가 과연 기증자분께 전달될까?’하는 의구심 반으로 저는 편지를 썼습니다. 제가 이렇게 아저씨께 편지를 쓰는 이유는 제게 천사로부터 온 편지 한 통을 소개하려 합니다.

저희 할머니는 백혈병을 앓고 계십니다. 저는 그 병에 대해 잘 알지 못하지만 완치까지는 매우 힘들고 수년이 걸린다는 사실을 알고 있습니다. 백혈병이라는 소식을 처음 들었을 때 엄마도 저도 많이 울었던 기억이 납니다. 골수이식만이 유일한 치료인데 가족 간에도 골수가 맞을 확률은 매우 적다고 합니다. 그런데 기적이 찾아왔습니다. 가족들도 안 맞았던 골수를 너무나 고맙게도 선뜻 기증해 주시겠다는 분이 나타나 주셨습니다. 현재 이식 후 힘드시지만 할머니께서 조금씩 조금씩 회복하고 계시며 우리 가정에도 희망의 꽃이 피었습니다.

‘감사편지 쓰기’ 덕분에 그분께 쓴 편지는 조혈모세포협회를 통해 전달됐고 몇 달이 지나 기증자분께서 답장을 써주셨습니다. 원래 기증해 주시는 분이나 받는 분이나 서로를 절대 알 수 없어 편지가 전달될지도 몰랐는데 답장까지 받게 돼 놀랍고 감사한 마음입니다. 할머니께 골수를 기증해 주신 것도 너무나 고마운데 답장까지 주시다니 정말 천사로부터 온 편지 아닐까요? 그래서 말인데요. 엄마가 좋아하시는 ‘아침편지’에서 아저씨께서 이 편지를 소개해 주시면 정말 감사하겠습니다. “안녕하세요? 저는 이번에 골수이식에 참여하게 된 공여자입니다. 먼저 수여자님의 건강 회복을 진심으로 바라며 감사의 말을 전하고 싶어서입니다∼”로 시작하는 공여자 선생님의 말씀은 제 마음과 눈을 멈추게 했습니다. 도리어 감사하시다니….

저는 아직 그분의 이름도 얼굴도 모릅니다. 아니 절대 알려주시지 않는다고 하시네요. 그래도 이런 편지는 누군가에게 아니 모두에게 알려드리고 싶었어요. 이런 소중한 분과의 인연을 만들어주시고 천사의 편지를 받게 도움 주신 ‘감사편지 쓰기’ 대회에도 감사드리고 싶어서 이 편지를 쓰게 됐습니다. 다시 한 번 이런 기회를 주신 모든 분께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 다시 한 번 아저씨를 비롯해 이 대회에도 감사드립니다.
